Lessons from the Books of Samuel

Currently, I am up to 2 Samuel 12 and the purpose of this post is to discuss the lessons already learned from the Books of Samuel.

Firstly, David was born and raised in a humble background with a humble family. He was a Shepherd and he eventually became King. In the same way, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd and he is the King of Kings. We can see a prophecy here in the very fact that they are both Shepherds who are both Kings.

We see the humility of Christ who came to serve His people and lead them safely home to eternal happiness with God in Heaven. As Christians, we must recognise that you have to serve others and be served by others.  It is in serving others that we serve Christ.

David's big moment came when he killed Goliath the giant Philistine. Goliath laughed at David as he was not a big man. On the contrary, he was a weakling compared with Goliath. We can learn here that the greatest of lessons can come from the most unlikely of places. My brother-in-law is seriously disabled. He cannot talk or walk and yet he radiates love and blessings from the Lord. It is such a pleasure to spend time with him.

God can do anything. He is capable of absolutely anything and in David's encounter with Goliath, David knew that God was on his side. The deciding factor in David's victory was his faith in the Lord.

Yesterday, I read of David's behaviour with Uriah the Hittite. David murdered Uriah so that David could have Uriah's wife. God had given David the very best life possible and David had Uriah killed in battle so that David could have Uriah's wife. God was very angry here, with David. Uriah didn't have much so when he lost his life and his wife, God punished David by letting his young son be killed, shortly after birth. Here we can learn that God made us who we are, giving us the valuables, assets, relationships and possessions so that we can live according to His will. If we force something else to happen, we are in effect saying to God that we are not satisfied with His provision for our lives. We can learn a lot here.

For a start, we can learn that we can only follow one course. We cannot worship both God and money. We have to set our sights on either one or the other. We cannot serve both. If you put your income and your worldly possessions first, you are foolish. Can you take them with you when you die? Do you believe in God's salvation for your soul? If there is a Heaven and a Hell, and you do not believe in them, but live your life how you wish, you will certainly find out in a very negative way. If there is no Heaven or Hell we will never know.

Tomorrow, I will talk to you about 2 Samuel 13, 14 and 15.  May you have a blessed day.
